Aikido
In Aikido, interestingly enough, there is no punching or kicking. It is purely self defense with no offensive moves. It utilizes holds and joint locks and the principle of nonresistance to cause the attacker’s momentum to work against him. Using his energy to throw them away form you or achieve control over them.
Founded in the early 1900’s by Morihei Ueshiba, or O Sensei (‘Great Teacher’) as he was often referred to, this martial art traces its origin to Japanese Samuri traditions. As a devout Buddhist, Ueshiba perfected the techniques by adding religious philosophy. According to Ueshiba: “The secret is to harmonize with the movement of the universe and bring ourselves into accord with the universe itself.”
As a martial art it has been described as a non-aggressive physical art form that incorporates spirituality; known universally as an ‘art of peace’. Not solely a self defense technique, it has been portrayed as a spiritual journey, an exercise for physical health and overall well-being.
Training is usually partner based. Through training one should experience increased energy, flexibility and muscle development. The importance of achieving complete mental calm and control of one’s own body is emphasized to master he aggressor’s attack. Many of the techniques are a result of Ueshiba’s innovation of blending Jujitsu joint locks and throws and the body movements of sword and spear fighting.
