Dorm Safety
Its not much fun to think of dorm safety as we embark on our college journey, but we’ve all heard about the college student abducted right off the campus, never to be seen alive again. Follow these basic common sense guidelines to avoid becoming the next statistic. When you move in get familiar with the campus and determine the best route between your residence hall, your classes and activities. Always take the safest route, not the fastest. Share your class and activity schedule with friends and family. Travel in groups of two or more at night, staying on the sidewalk away from bushes and unlit paths. When walking alone do not wear headphones, talk on the phone or use electronics that could distract you. Always be fully aware of your surroundings, making eye contact with those you meet and pass while walking. Walk facing traffic so that no one can pull up beside you unexpectedly. Let someone know where you’re going when you go out and when you plan on returning. I know you’re an adult now and you don’t want to have to report to anyone, but the nature of today’s world dictates that we have a “buddy system”. Check out the campus security office. They are required by law to provide campus crime statistics, security policies and information regarding registered sex offenders employed or enrolled by the college. Common sense dorm safety includes: Keep your doors locked at all times whether you are there or not. Do not loan your key out. Lock your windows if you are on the first of second floors. Do not open the door unless you know who is knocking- hopefully there in a peep hole. Mark all of your property. Lock your PC’s, laptops, etc. Good luck in you college career! Be safe and study hard!
