Jujitsu
Jujitsu, also spelled Ju Jitsu and Jiu-Jitsu, is a martial art that teaches holds, strikes, kicks and joint locks and even choking, enabling one to overcome attacks from bigger, stronger, even armed opponents. It does not utilize strength against strength, it uses the attacker’s strength and force of attack against him. Now this sounds like it could be of some value. I’m sure that as with any martial art it involves years of training and dedication.
Loosely translated it means the art of suppleness or flexibility. Students are taught how to use the least amount force necessary in hand to hand combat. Emphasis is put on turning an attacker’s own force against him and putting him off balance, grappling moves and strikes to vital areas. The student is also taught to evade violence, strike nerves and pressure points.
This Martial Art originated in Japan over 2500 years ago. Around 800 AD it was part of the samurai’s training. In 1532 Tenenuchi Hisamori is credited with creating his school. This school taught armed and unarmed fighting methods. The form evolved through the years branching off and forming aikido, karate and judo.
In the early 1900’s Japanese master Mitsuyo Maeda traveled to Brazil and began teaching. One of his students Carlos Gracie excelled and passed his teaching on to his brother, who later taught his sons. The Gracie family’s teaching became renowned through the 20th century for their style of Brazilian Jujitsu.
Founded in 1971 the United States Ju-Jutsu Federation (USJJF) is the national governing body in the U.S., a member of the International Sport Jujtsu Association. Sport Ju-Jutsu encompasses all martial arts fighting ranges.
